Walter Clark military census papers, 1917.

At the beginning of World War I in 1917, the State of Connecticut conducted a census to determine who in the state was eligible to serve and what equipment was available. Walter Clark, of Hartford, was involved in this venture. The papers include correspondence among committee members and the governor, printed materials, and drafts of the census forms. According to one document, the census was to include men, industries, doctors and nurses, motor transport, motor boats, and newspapers. Later it was decided to also canvas women. Drafts of the forms for women are included, with handwritten comments regarding possible changes to the questions.
